Details

Voice: idk yet but low & androgynous
First Appearance: "Ninja Hide-and-Seek!"

Biospark is a recurring side character in Motto! Hoshi no Kaabii, debuting in the episode Ninja Hide-and-Seek!. They make few background appearances, but seems to spend a notable amount of time in Dreamland after their second appearance.

They are notable for their gender being ambiguous; though never explicitly referred to as such, they are widely assumed to be nonbinary by fans. In English localizations, different characters use different pronouns for them, but this article will use "they/them" for clarity.

Appearance

Biospark is a round ninja wearing purple clothing and a yellow visor. They have long red hair tied in a high ponytail. Their feet and hands are red, and their hands are detached from their body. Though their face is kept in shadow, the color used to shade their face is notably more purple-leaning than other characters who have masked/shaded faces, which might imply their body color is some shade of purple. They have yellow eyes that glow in the dark.

From their second appearance onwards, they have a scar that runs down the left side of their face, and a notch in their visor to match.

Personality

Biospark is shown to be very guarded and distrustful of others; many of the conflicts they are involved in are at least partly caused by their refusal to simply talk about the situation. When faced with conflict they are more likely to bolt. Even between allies they are cynical and reluctant to interact on more than a surface level.

They do seem to have a loyal streak to those who do manage to get through to them, though they seem to remain abrasive in the way they speak even then. On rare occasions where they are attempting to be kind, they are extremely awkward and are prone to falling silent.

They dislike children, but it seems to stem from their awkward inability to behave in a non-abrasive manner.

Gender

The topic of their gender first came up in Chasing Shadows Part 2, after Yamikage assumes them to be a woman and taunts them over it. After his defeat, Biospark offhandedly mentions they simply played into it because his sexism annoyed them and they wanted to make him eat his words. When asked if they're a man, then, they simply replied "I didn't say that." While they never discuss it explicitly again, their father Sir Dragato also notably avoids referring to them with gendered language even when it would otherwise be unnatural, supporting the assumption that they may be nonbinary.

Because they do not make attempts to "correct" perceptions of their gender often, different characters in the series refer to them differently. Below is a table of pronoun sets and the cast members who use them:

He/Him
  • Castle residents such as the Minister family, Dedede and Escargon, Captain Waddle Doo, Meta Knight and Sword and Blade.
  • Benikage starts out here.
  • Most other characters with incidental interactions with Biospark seem to fall here as well.
She/Her
  • Galacta Knight
  • Yamikage
  • Sir Nonsurat
  • Benikage, from his second interaction with Biospark onwards, for unclear reasons
They/Them
  • Sir Dragato, with most of the GSA leadership following suit.
  • In later episodes, Fumu and Galacta Knight begin using this interchangeably with the pronoun set they were using before.
